Roughly 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Officers report they were notified late on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then located multiple other marked cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests indicate the liquid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; officials are not yet cognizant of any injuries in connection with the incident," they stated.
City officials announced they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for details.
An important official stated the attack rendered him speechless and had to be solved rapidly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on a platform, recalling the killing of nine people by a shooter aiming at people of migrant background in February 2020.
